There are many positives to the rise of the 3 point shot, but there are still a few negatives. This article touches on one positive–the bettering fan experience–and one negative–big men being pushed away. There is more to the NBA than what happens on the court. Fan experience is the driving factor of NBA organization, and when fans like what they see they are more likely to go see it again. Fans love seeing long shots and powerful dunks and the increase in volume of 3 point attempts has enabled those two things to occur. On the negative side of things, while fans may be getting what they want, traditional big men are not. As the speed and spacing of the game increase at an incredible rate, they are too slow to keep up and eventually they will be forgotten. With all the great things the modern NBA brings, this may be the one negative, and it has effected a lot of players who came into the league with superstar potential.
Goldsberry, Kirk. SprawlBall: A Visual Tour of the New Era of the NBA. 2019.
SprawlBall dives into the the 3-point shot and the effect it has had on the game. Through shot charts and insight from current and former NBA players, Kirk Goldsberry is able to take the reader on a journey through the modernization of the NBA. This source is extremely important to my project because it is my only source that focuses solely on the statistical reason for the development of the league. Kirk Goldsberry is considered the "king" of advanced statistics, so reading a book by him can only better my understanding of the 3-point shot's importance to the game.
Kram, Zach. "The 3-Point Boom Is Far From Over." The Ringer, 27 Feb. 2019, www.theringer.com/nba/2019/2/27/18240583/3-point-boom-nba-daryl-morey.
In The 3-Point Boom Is Far From Over Zach Kram discusses the evolution of the game and its 3 point-shot's absurd development in a very short amount of time. Over the past 7 years there has bean a significant increase in wide open 3 point attempts per game. This is because players are shooting further and further away each year. If players are being forced to guard out to 30 feet, then the rest of the court will be much more open. The development of the 3 point shot has not only helped shooters, it has even helped players who get to the rim like Russell Westbrook and Kyrie Irving. This article is very valuable to my project because it will give another perspective to look at when thinking about the 3 point shot. Rather than viewing just the 3 point shot, I am looking at how much of an effect the 3 point shot will have on so many other aspects of the game.
McCallum, Jack. Seven Seconds or Less: My Season on the Bench with the Runnin' and Gunnin' Phoenix Suns. New York, Simon & Schuster, 2006.
Seven Seconds or Less by Jack McCallum is a book that is going to help me see a different perspective of the NBA than most articles and books can show. McCallum spent an entire season on the bench with an NBA team and wrote about his experience. This wasn't just any team though; it was the 2005-2006 Phoenix Suns. The Suns were all about spacing, flow, and pace, which are now the characteristics of a modern NBA offense. At the time, for fans, and even opposing teams, this style of play was like something they have never seen before. To understand the play style in the current NBA, I have to learn how this play style came to be, and this book is the perfect way to do that.
Thompson, Marcus. Golden: The Miraculous Rise of Steph Curry. New York, Touchstone, 2017.
While many players and coaches had a role in the modernization of the NBA, no other player had a bigger impact than Stephen Curry. My project topic is about the increase in 3 point shots in the NBA, so understanding who is behind that growth is very important. Stephen Curry revolutionized the NBA with the 3 point shot in the way Babe Ruth did with the home run or Lawrence Taylor with the sack. Steph Curry's impact reaches much further than just the NBA though. As the rise of Stephen Curry began, the way young fans approached the game changed along side it. Over the last six years the 3 point shot has become the most important part of the game, just as Steph Curry rose into stardom. This is not a coincidence–Steph changed the entire basketball world.
